Anxiety Hypnotherapy in Cornwall

Calm Your Mind with CBT Hypnotherapy

That persistent hum of worry. The racing thoughts that arrive uninvited. The physical tension you carry in your shoulders, your chest, your jaw, often without even realising it. If anxiety has become a constant companion, you deserve support that actually reaches the root of it, not just the surface. Anxiety hypnotherapy, combined with CBT, may be the approach that helps you find your way back to calm.

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most natural responses a human being can have. It exists because, at some point in our evolution, a rapid alarm system kept us alive. The problem is that the same system designed to protect us from immediate danger can become over-triggered in modern life, firing in response to emails, social situations, health worries, or the simple uncertainty of everyday existence.

When anxiety becomes disproportionate to the situation, or when it begins to affect your sleep, your relationships, your work, or your ability to enjoy life, it is no longer just a passing reaction. It becomes something that needs attention and support.

Anxiety is not a character flaw. It is not a sign of weakness. It is a pattern: a way your nervous system has learnt to respond, often reinforced over many years. That means it can be changed.

Common forms of anxiety include generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), where worry feels constant and wide-ranging; social anxiety, which makes interactions feel threatening or overwhelming; health anxiety, which involves persistent fears around illness; and panic disorder, characterised by sudden, intense episodes of physical and emotional fear. Many people experience a combination, and some experience anxiety tied to specific life circumstances such as work pressure, relationship stress, or major life transitions.

Whatever form anxiety takes for you, it is real, it is significant, and it is something that therapy can help with.

How Anxiety Hypnotherapy Works

Anxiety hypnotherapy at this practice draws on a combined model of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and hypnotherapy, known as Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH). This integrated approach works particularly well for anxiety because it addresses both the conscious thought patterns that fuel worry and the deeper, subconscious habit of responding to perceived threat with fear.

CBT helps you identify and examine the anxious thoughts that are driving your experience: the catastrophic predictions, the “what ifs”, the cognitive distortions that make threats feel bigger and more certain than they are. Through structured, collaborative conversation, we work on challenging those thoughts and building more balanced, realistic perspectives.

Hypnotherapy then reinforces this work at a level beneath conscious awareness. In a deeply relaxed hypnotic state, your subconscious mind becomes more open to new associations and responses. Rather than defaulting to anxiety when a trigger arises, we work to build a calmer, more regulated baseline, so that the alarm system becomes better calibrated over time.

Research suggests that both CBT and hypnotherapy can be effective for anxiety, and evidence indicates that combining them may enhance results for many people. Sessions may also incorporate mindfulness and relaxation techniques that give you practical tools to use between appointments, so progress isn’t limited to the therapy room.

The process is always collaborative and client-led. You set the pace. We work with what feels manageable, and build from there.

Types of Anxiety This Approach Can Support

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

GAD involves persistent worry that moves from topic to topic and rarely feels resolved. CBT hypnotherapy can help you identify the worry patterns and interrupt the cycle, building a greater tolerance for uncertainty and a calmer overall state.

Social Anxiety and Confidence

If social situations feel threatening, or if fear of judgment affects your daily life, this approach can help reframe how your mind interprets social interaction and build a more secure sense of self in relation to others.

Health Anxiety

Health anxiety can make even minor physical sensations feel alarming. We work on the thought patterns that interpret bodily sensations as danger, and on building a healthier, more proportionate relationship with physical awareness.

Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are often terrifying precisely because they feel so physical and so out of control. Hypnotherapy can help regulate the nervous system's response, while CBT works on the thoughts that escalate and maintain panic cycles.

Stress and Overwhelm

Whether driven by work, relationships, finances, or life transitions, chronic stress can tip into anxiety. Sessions focus on the specific pressures you're carrying and on building genuine resilience, not just coping.

Phobias

Specific phobias often respond well to hypnotherapy. If you have a particular phobia you'd like to address, this can be discussed at your initial consultation and a tailored approach developed.

What to Expect from Your Sessions

Your first session is about understanding you: your experience of anxiety, how long it’s been present, what tends to trigger it, and what you’d like to be different. There are no wrong answers, and nothing you share will be judged.

From there, sessions typically blend talking and CBT work in the first part, followed by a guided hypnotherapy element. Hypnosis feels nothing like the dramatic portrayals you may have seen. It is a state of deep relaxation and focused attention, similar to the feeling just before you fall asleep. You are fully aware, fully in control, and can stop at any time.

You will leave each session with something tangible: a technique, a reframe, a tool you can use between appointments. Progress is reviewed regularly and the approach adapts as you do.

Most clients working on anxiety find benefit within four to eight sessions, though some prefer to continue longer-term. This is always your choice.

Sessions are available in person in Penzance, Cornwall, and online via video call for clients across the UK.

I am a qualified CBT hypnotherapist based in Penzance, with additional training and experience in personal training and coaching. I understand that anxiety often has a physical dimension as well as a psychological one, and I bring a genuinely holistic perspective to every session.

A Note on Seeking Support

Hypnotherapy and CBT can be a valuable part of managing anxiety, and for many people they make a significant difference. If your anxiety feels severe, has been present for a long time, or is significantly affecting your daily life, I would also encourage you to speak with your GP. Therapy works best as part of a wider support network, and there is no conflict between working with me and accessing other forms of care. Your wellbeing is always the priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Evidence suggests that hypnotherapy can be effective for anxiety, particularly when combined with CBT techniques. Many clients find that the combination helps them both understand and change their anxious thought patterns at a conscious level, while the hypnotherapy reinforces calmer responses more deeply. Results vary between individuals, but many people find meaningful relief through this approach.

There is no fixed number. Most clients working on anxiety begin to notice a shift within four to eight sessions, but this depends on the type of anxiety, how long it has been present, and individual factors. We review progress regularly and you are never locked into a set number of sessions. You can pause or stop at any point.

Research suggests that combining hypnotherapy with CBT may enhance outcomes compared to using either approach alone. CBT works on your conscious thought patterns, while hypnotherapy reinforces change at a subconscious level. Together they address anxiety from more than one angle, which is why many clients find the combined approach particularly effective.

Most people describe hypnosis as feeling deeply relaxed, calm, and focused, similar to the feeling of being absorbed in a good book, or the quiet state just before sleep. You are not unconscious. You are aware of everything that is happening and remain in complete control throughout. Many clients find the hypnotherapy part of the session to be the most restful experience they have in their week.

Yes. Online sessions are available via video call for clients anywhere in the UK. The hypnotherapy element translates very well to an online format, and many clients prefer the comfort of working from their own home, which can itself support relaxation. All you need is a quiet space and a reliable internet connection.

In most cases, yes. Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy and does not interact with medication. If you are currently taking medication for anxiety, I would always encourage you to let your GP know you are exploring therapy alongside it. I am happy to discuss any concerns about this before your first session.
